The drive is bumpy, but many cars we saw were not 4wd...the road is maintained well enough (no huge ruts or overly steep parts), but is washboard bumpy. If you take it at a careful, moderate pace, you should be fine. We drove a 4wd Jeep but never needed the 4wd.
