If you stay on the main road out of Bunkerville and just head the distance to the turnoff for Whitney Peaks you should be fine. The road is paved until you turn left towards Whitney Peaks. Be aware that few sites are labeled. I would not venture off the main roads. It is easy to get lost even with a map. Some roads are just washes where you have to choose the best route. Be sure to tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. There is no cell phone reception. Bring water and realize there are no bathrooms.
Gold Butte is a large area of mostly unpopulated areas to hike in. Dogs should not be a problem. You should easily be able to find an area with no people around so the dogs can run freely.
