Jack Shapiro Sr., a retired NYPD sergeant from Holbrook, had set out Sunday to do what he loved: surfing. His son Jack Shapiro Jr., 19, of Miller Place, said in an interview Tuesday that his dad, who went surfing often in the summer, was also equipped to deal with water in the colder temperatures.

Holbrook man dies in apparent drowning at Gilgo Beach
Jack Shapiro, 54, of Holbrook, was transported via ambulance to Good Samaritan University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852- 6392.

LONG ISLAND - A former NYPD officer died after being found unresponsive off the coast of Gilgo Beach on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. Jack Shapiro, 54, was pulled ashore by a bystander while surfing in Long Island’s frigid waters.
