Cardinal Walter McElroy of San Diego is named by Pope Francis to replace the retiring Cardinal Wilton Gregory leading the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.

McElroy, known for a pastoral approach to migrants and the LGBTQ+ community, will lead an archdiocese still bruised by a sexual abuse and mismanagement scandal.

Pope Francis has named like-minded San Francisco native Cardinal Robert McElroy as the archbishop of Washington, D.C.

Overlook Fire initially started 12:28 a.m. Jan. 1 in San Diego County. It has been burning on federal land managed by the United States Forest Service for five days. At this time, there is no data on the containment status of the fire and the cause has yet to be determined.

Re-elected San Diego County supervisors were sworn in Monday morning — with the exception of Nora Vargas, who decided last month not to serve her second term.
