Families enrolling children in Oklahoma public schools will have to provide proof of their U.S. citizenship under new rules approved Tuesday by the state’s education board.

The Oklahoma State Board of Education voted Tuesday to approve a proposal requiring parents to report their immigration or citizenship status when enrolling their children in school.

Ryan Walters said he would help the Trump administration in “any way they see fit” to carry out immigration enforcement.

For decades, children of families living in the country illegally have had the right to attend public school based on a 1982 Supreme Court decision known as Plyler v. Doe.

Oklahoma may require parents to report their immigration status when enrolling children in schools. “We're not going to allow sanctuary schools here in Oklahoma,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters told CNN’s Brianna Keilar on Tuesday afternoon.

The new rule, approved unanimously by the State Board of Education, still needs to be approved by the Legislature and the governor.
