The family of Sonya Massey, a Black woman who was fatally shot by police in Illinois in July 2024, will receive $10 million as part of a settlement with officials from Sangamon County, the attorney representing the family said on Wednesday.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump told reporters the settlement, approved Tuesday night by the Sangamon County Board, is poignant.

Sangamon County officials labeled the settlement as part of “ongoing efforts to address the tragic death of Sonya Massey.”
