Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Tuesday moved to the Calcutta High Court demanding capital punishment for the accused Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case, against the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court order giving life imprisonment.

The West Bengal government has appealed to the Calcutta High Court's Division Bench against the trial court's life imprisonment verdict convicting Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar case. The next hearing in the case will be held on 27th January.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday opposed the West Bengal government's appeal before the Calcutta High Court against the life imprisonment sentence to Sanjay Roy, who was convicted of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata last year.
