Firefighters are hoping for a break Friday from the fierce winds that have fueled massive blazes in the Los Angeles area, killing 10 people, obliterating whole neighborhoods and setting the nation’s second-largest city on edge.

The Kenneth Fire broke out at about 2:40 p.m. along the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, growing to 960 acres as of Thursday evening, prompting mandatory evacuations. "We’re expecting this fire to rapidly spread due to high winds," said L.A. Mayor Karen Bass during a Thursday news conference.

The 75-acre Woodley Fire sparked Wednesday morning near the Sepulveda Basin in the San Fernando Valley. The blaze is burning by the 101 and 405 freeways and is being driven by strong winds. Cal Fire reports that the flames pose the threat of crossing Burbank Boulevard.

With the Los Angeles area already reeling from two wildfires, a third broke out Tuesday night in the north end of the Valley.
