Jan 26, 2021 · They don’t hold as many now but they have 3 on exhibit areas. All of the snow leopards have access to outdoor spaces behind the scenes, with attached dens. These spaces are pretty basic but not dissimilar to other zoos, and the animals do rotate on exhibit. The Bronx Zoo follows a similar system with species like Indian Rhino and Tiger.

Dec 18, 2010 · Bronx Zoo’s first hippo was, of course, the famous and long-lived “Pete” who was born in the Central Park Menagerie in 1903, transferred to Bronx Zoo in 1906 and died in 1953. I don’t think that Bronx Zoo acquired its second hippo until after “Pete” died.

Feb 20, 2008 · Perhaps the Bronx Zoo jumped on the bandwagon, as something like 16 different U.S. zoos have stopped exhibiting elephants, but at least the zoos that still keep them are improving their enclosures. Another good point that was brought up was the disparity between European and U.S. zoos in terms of elephant husbandry in the winter.

African Plains, Bears, and Zoo Center - these three all feature the big animals that people expect to see at a zoo, in settings that are reasonably nice but not exceptional compared to other zoos; still they are staples of any Bronx Zoo visit (miscellany like camels and bison also fit this characterization) 12-14.

Apr 8, 2009 · Wow. Where to even start. First off, the world financial situation has resulted in the Bronx Zoo laying off or accepting early retirement of nearly 200 people, including management. The cost of keeping animals, per se, is only a fraction of the cost of operating a zoo--the vast majority goes to pay people.
